PRESENT SITUATION / NOTES:
Flooding drowned 10 kittens and one dog in their cages at Louisville Metro
Animal Services shelter 8/4/09.
Director Giles Meloche led an effort to
rescue animals and then supervised the transfer of about 250 dogs and 300
cats from the shelter to temporary housing at the Kentucky Fair and
Exposition Center. [NO animals remain at the water-soaked shelter].

“The water came up so fast,” Meloche said. “It went from three inches to
three feet in about 30 minutes.” Capt. Wayne Zelinsky, an officer with
Animal Services, said about 20 people worked frantically to save the animals
as the water rose. “By the time we got to the (second) building, the dogs’
heads were the only thing above water,” Zelinsky said.

Meloche said kittens who drowned were on the floor and couldn’t climb above
rising water, as their mother did. He said he wasn’t sure of circumstances
surrounding the dog’s drowning. The dog was found dead. Spokeswoman Jackie
Gulbe said it is unclear when they can be returned to the shelter.

UPDATE: 7/15/09
Kitten Cooker Sentence – 1 Year Jail + No Animals For 3 Years

kitten
Cheyenne Cherry tossed her ex-roommate’s kitty, Tiger Lily (above), into the
stove, then left so she didn’t have to hear the cat’s anguished cries.

FULL STORY: Teen Cheyenne Cherry taunts animal activists after guilty plea for killing kitten in oven
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/ny_crime/2009/07/15/2009-07-15_cheyenne_cherry_taunts_animal_activists_after_getting_plea_deal_killing_kitten_i.html

OFFENDER: Cheyenne Cherry

PLEA: Guilty on animal cruelty and attempted burglary in 5/6/09 killing at
former roommate’s apartment. Cherry and a 14-year-old friend ransacked
Valerie Hernandez’s apartment and trapped her kitten, Tiger Lilly, inside an
activated oven where the animal roasted alive. In court 7/15/09, Cherry
admitted to Judge Margaret Clancy that the younger girl put the cat in the
oven — and “I didn’t let the cat out.”

PENALTY: Plea bargain results in one-year jail sentence. Under the
agreement, Cherry pleaded guilty to two charges in a six-count indictment.
She waived her right to appeal and agreed not to keep a pet for the next
three years. Cherry faces formal sentencing July 31, 2009.

The second girl faces trial in Family Court because of her age. Prosecutor
Jennifer Troiano said Cherry was granted a plea deal because her cohort was
“more culpable” for the crimes.

7/15/09: A heartless kitty killer hissed angrily at animal rights activists,
grinning widely as she took credit for stuffing the helpless pet into a
500-degree oven. “It’s dead, bitch!” snapped an unrepentant Cheyenne Cherry,
sticking her tongue out after a plea bargain that will put her behind bars
for a year in the May 6 killing of tiny Tiger Lily….  REST OF STORY:

1) Help Sallie And Ellie Find Their Forever

Cheri Moon, Best Friends staff. Read Officer Petitt’s assessment of the dogs
and more: http://www.petjustice.org/sallie-ellie.html

BACKGROUND: Kinship Circle member Kelly Jenkins, a former New Orleans
resident, local coordinator for Animal Rescue New Orleans (ARNO), and now an
attorney in Georgia — is on a mission to place two pit bulls saved by a
rural Georgia police officer. Kelly writes: “This officer is an inspiration
to us here in dogfight/neglect country, as he took a chance to save two
grateful and abused dogs.” Can you help Sallie and Ellie find forever?

FULL STORY: Officer who rescued two abused pit bulls tries to find homes…
http://network.bestfriends.org/campaigns/pitbulls/news.aspx?pID=11674

EXCERPTS (6/30/09, Best Friends Network) — For Officer Bruce Petitt, it was
just a normal day patrolling the town of Wadley, Georgia. But for two very
lucky pit bulls, that June day marked the end of a miserable life tied to a
tree by a four-foot logging chain… The two dogs he found were emaciated
and covered in cuts and scars. They had no shelter, water or food… Even
more disturbing was the sight of a litter of dead puppies just out of reach
of the dogs. “The dog that is now called Ellie had the puppies. They died
because…she couldn’t get to her babies.” says Petitt.

Wadley has no animal control or shelters, but…the two dogs were brought to
the local veterinarian clinic… “Nobody had ever attempted to prosecute an
animal abuse case in this county… Luckily, with a little bit of Internet
research I found a guide for law enforcement that explained how to
successfully prosecute animal abuse,” says Petitt…

Today, Ellie and Sallie are loving, safe dogs reveling in the discovery of
human interaction and love. Pettit says, “My boys (ages 7 and 5) and I go to
the vet clinic and handle them and walk them around, and the dogs lick and
love and do everything that a good dog should do.” Officer Pettit believes
the dogs were born to be family pets and encourages people looking for a
loyal, loving dog to consider these two ladies.

POTENTIAL ADOPTERS OF SALLIE AND/OR ELLIE:

Kelly Jenkins: “I am presently trying to find foster and/or permanent
placement for these two. I believe I have one placed in Oregon and continue
to work to find forever for the second. Local rescues donated the dogs’
spays, along with money toward their heartworm treatment. We also have
volunteers standing by to transport these two to their happily ever after.”

2) More Pressure To Free Tina, Jewel, And Queenie
ALERT WRITER: In Defense Of Animals (IDA), idainfo@idausa.org
http://ida.convio.net/site/MessageViewer?em_id=6301.0&printer_friendly=1

Tina and Jewel with Cole Bros. Circus. USDA inspectors have documented
Animal Welfare Act violations — multiple ankus abuse wounds, eyewitness
reports of beatings… Yet USDA hasn’t upheld its own confiscation
regulations to ensure no further harm to Tina, Jewel and Queenie.

BACKGROUND: Thanks to all [including Kinship Circle activists!] who
contacted Congress and USDA on behalf of Tina, Jewel and Queenie, elephants
suffering at the hands of their trainer, Will Davenport, a chronic violator
of federal animal welfare law. USDA set up a special team to handle all the
calls. We are confident that only a little more pressure can achieve…

TAKE ACTION:
1) Urge your Congressional Representative and Senators to demand that
Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack’s agency confiscate Tina, Jewel and
Queenie and send them to a sanctuary. Ask them to insist that the new
administration correct the USDA’S historic failure to enforce the Animal
Welfare Act in the manner intended when passed four decades ago.

USA Senate – http://www.senate.gov

2) Remind USDA to take immediate steps to save these elephants. Ms. Wright
oversees animal welfare enforcement at USDA. If her office is reluctant to
take a message, politely explain that she needs to exercise her supervisory
powers over this situation, before it is too late.
Ann Wright, Deputy Undersecretary for Marketing and Regulation, Department
of Agriculture: ph: 202-720-4256, 202-720-7813; ann.wright@osec.usda.gov

SAMPLE LETTER BY IDA (Kinship Circle did not write this):
Dear Representative and Senators:
I am write in regard to the dire situation involving three circus elephants,
Tina, Jewel and Queenie. New USDA inspection reports indicate that the
health of these elephants continues to deteriorate. They have lost a
combined total of nearly 2,000 pounds in less than a year.

The elephants are reportedly back in Texas, undergoing Tuberculosis testing
and veterinary analysis. Yet, inexplicably, the USDA still leaves the
elephants in the control of Will Davenport, under whose watch the elephants
have become dangerously debilitated not once, but twice in two years. During
this time, the USDA, which is supposed to enforce the AWA, has done little
more than chronicle Mr. Davenport’s repeated failures to provide adequate
veterinary care to the elephants and handle them safely and humanely.

The USDA’s refusal to act in this case, despite their own documentation of
the elephants’ declining health, is unacceptable. The USDA’s claim that it
cannot confiscate these elephants is simply not supported by the facts. As
your constituent I request that you contact the USDA, remind them they’re
empowered to save these elephants, and demand that they do so.

Many thanks for your consideration,

SAMPLE LETTER BY Laura Catterton (Kinship Circle did not write this)
RE: Incident # ECSO 09CAD133681 / Officer Jason Barnes ECSO
6/20/09 (between 12:30 PM – 1:00 PM) 827 N. 61st St: Pensacola, FL 32506

Dear Sheriff Morgan,

I bring to your attention a crime that was committed in Pensacola on 6/20/09
in which no criminal charges were filed by Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.
On 6/20, with a heat index of approximately 105 degrees, a chained dog died
after becoming entangled on a root, thereby making it impossible for the dog
to access water. The dog, a large Newfoundland breed with a heavy coat, had
no shelter and basically cooked to death.

According to records for the address where the dog died on 6/20 (827 N. 61st
St.), Animal Control Officer Jankowski contacted ECSO and Officer Jason
Barnes went out. The ECSO record shows no investigation, no write-up, no
animal cruelty charges filed. ACO Jankowski was forced to issue a mere
citation (Civil Infraction) with mandatory court appearance because Officer
Barnes failed to file any criminal charges.

The dog died in the arms of ACO Jankowski, who recorded: “The dog had water
but could not get to it because it was tangled on a ground stump. I took the
dog off its chain and moved him to the shade. I told the owners to get water
buckets and a hose now. One owner refused to do anything. The second owner
did help out but it was to late the dog died due to the heat.”

Under 2008 Florida Statutes (828.12 Cruelty to animals), deprivation of
“necessary sustenance or shelter” warrants misdemeanor charges. Moreover, a
person whose deliberate actions result in the “cruel death or excessive or
repeated infliction of unnecessary pain or suffering” is guilty of a felony
of the third degree.

I sincerely hope an investigation is underway to bring criminal charges
against the owner(s). If this case doesn’t constitute animal cruelty, what
does in Escambia County? I’d appreciate any assistance in this matter.

Sincerely, <YOUR FULL NAME, FULL ADDRESS, COUNTRY>

4) A Truck Stop Is No Place For A Tiger
ALERT WRITER: Alicia Graef, http://www.care2.com/causes/author/amgraef/
http://www.care2.com/causes/animal-welfare/blog/a-truck-stop-is-no-place-for-a-tiger/

BACKGROUND: Tony the Siberian Bengal tiger sadly resides at Tiger Truck Stop in Grosse Tete, LA, as an attraction for his owner Michael Sandlin.
Previously, Sandlin had violated a public ordinance that prevents people
from owning and displaying wild/exotic animals. This also kept the state’s
Wildlife and Fishery Dept. from granting him a permit to own Tony. When they gave Sandlin 30 days to find Tony a new home, he instead filed a lawsuit.

Iberville Parish Council chose to amend the ordinance to legalize keeping a
tiger, instead of enforcing their own laws. So, Tony isn’t going anywhere.

Tony’s champions, including Care2 member Sky Williamson, have joined forces with Big Cat Rescue to move Tony to their accredited wildlife preserve…Williamson, who stumbled upon the truck stop in 2005, says, “It took me down to my knees. There were 15 big trucks lined up nearby, all of them running. The smell was horrid. There was feces all over the cage.”

Sandlin has 20 years worth of USDA violations including unsanitary feeding
practices, mishandling tigers, failure to provide clean water, adequate
shelter, veterinary care…and most recently (2007), failure to clean cages
and maintain adequate sanitation.

The ordinance was amended with conditions that Sandlin improve Tony’s living space. However, Williamson says he’s only repainted Tony’s cage… Louisiana Wildlife and Fishery Department has not issued Sandlin a permit, so he may keep Tony in these wretched conditions indefinitely.

TAKE ACTION: Speak up for Tony!

SAMPLE LETTER / Author Unknown (Kinship Circle did not write this):
I am concerned over recent reports of plans to build a primate breeding and
supply facility in Guayama City. I understand the project, led by the
Bioculture company, will ship long-tailed macaques and their offspring from
Mauritius for use in research. This proposal is a major step backwards at a
time when use of nonhuman primates in research is questioned by scientists,
ethicists and others worldwide.

Primates are intelligent, social animals with complex behavioral and
psychological needs. Perhaps you are unaware of their fate inside research
laboratories. These animals are subjected to extreme pain and suffering. For
example, many are used in toxicity testing which involves the forced
ingestion, inhalation or injection of poisonous chemicals. After years of
abuse, the animals are killed. Many researchers now agree that primate
experimentation is scientifically unnecessary and morally unacceptable.

I am disheartened to learn that Puerto Rico plans to to become a major
player in the supply of primates for research. Such a move will not only
result in the suffering of thousands of monkeys, it will also have a
negative and detrimental impact on Puerto Rico’s image abroad.

SAMPLE LETTER / Zelda Penzel, zpenzel@nyc.rr.com
(Kinship Circle did not write this):
Honorable Officials,

The civilized world is horrified to learn that the Republic of Korea still
permits the brutal slaughter of dogs and cats for human consumption. Forced
to live in tiny, filthy cages, the fate of these animals cannot be compared
to cattle slaughter in the western world, though this too is an abomination.

Two million South Korean dogs are electrocuted, strangled, or bludgeoned
each year. They are killed in the cruelest ways imaginable, because some
Koreans believe the adrenaline that rushes through the animal’s system will
improve virility in the consumer. This shamefully demonstrates the
superstition and misinformation which South Koreans continue to believe,
thanks to the government’s failure to educate its own people or to pass and
enforce humane laws that would prohibit such depraved practices.

Eyewitnesses have reported dogs torn apart while still alive and tormentors
who claim that the more prolonged the death, the better the taste.

The Republic of Korea will remain an object of scorn, derision and worldwide
boycott, so long as this practice continues. Dogs and cats are beloved
companion animals in almost every country around the globe, including South
Korea. Most of your own citizens view the abuse and killing of cats and dogs
as reprehensible. It is time to put an end to this barbaric practice.

Respectfully,
Zelda Penzel, President
PEACE~People for the End of Animal Cruelty and Exploitation

5. UAN/EARS Response In Flooded Fargo
3/27/09, Animals threatened by flooding need your help
http://ga4.org/uan/notice-description.tcl?newsletter_id=32229795

Volunteers with United Animal Nations’ Emergency Animal Rescue Service
(EARS) are on the ground in Fargo, North Dakota, where rising Red River
floodwaters and freezing temperatures are putting the lives of countless
animals at risk. This is the worst flooding Fargo has seen in more than 100
years. EARS volunteers have deployed to Fargo from six surrounding states…

EARS volunteers are working at a temporary shelter, where more than 80
animals have already been evacuated by their families. But as the Red River
continues rising to catastrophic levels, EARS volunteers are bracing for as
many as 1,000 animals in the next few days.

6. IFAW Expects Up To 5,000 Animals Need Aid
3/27/09, IFAW to Help Animals Affected by Record Floods in North Dakota
http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=prnw.20090327.DC90517&show_article=1&catnum=3

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW – www.ifaw.org) is sending
an emergency relief team to aid animals affected by record floods in North
Dakota. The full team and IFAW’s 36-foot transport trailer are expected to
be in Fargo on March 28…

IFAW is looking at an initial sheltering effort of up to 5,000 animals,
primarily pets. The animals are in Fargo but sheltering sites are a
significant distance to the west. Freezing temperatures and logistical
challenges will make it difficult to give immediate care to animals.

“We simply won’t know the scale of the situation until we get on the ground.
There may also be a significant number of livestock affected as well,” said
Dick Green, IFAW’s Emergency Relief Manager of Disasters. “One positive
development is that IFAW will be working with a coalition of animal-related
groups that haven’t fully mobilized together since Hurricane Katrina.”

Nearly 150 residents have been rescued from flooded homes and more than
1,000 North Dakota National Guardsmen have been called in to help with the
emergency. The floods are due to an unusually cold and snowy winter which
left a larger-than-normal snowpack. Recent warm weather and heavy rains
melted the snow and the frozen ground was unable to absorb the water. Since
melting the temperature has fallen and was recorded at 10 degrees on March
27 with a wind chill of 4 degree below zero. North Dakota Governor John
Hoeven has declared a state-wide flood emergency and the federal government
has declared it major disaster area and a public health emergency.

PetSmart Charities Sends Emergency Relief to North Dakota
http://www.marketwire.com/press-release/Petsmart-Charities-NASDAQ-PETM-967171.html
As floodwaters rise and evacuations continue in Fargo, N.D., PetSmart
Charities is sending an Emergency Relief Waggin’ trailer stocked with at
least 16 tons of pet food and supplies, as well as a back-up trailer  with
essential care items for pets and their rescuers, to the affected areas…

Humane Society of Missouri Disaster Response Team deploys to North Dakota
http://www.hsmo.org/m_eventsprograms/inthenews.php
3/27/09: The Humane Society of Missouri Disaster Response Team has been
deployed to North Dakota to rescue animals affected by severe flooding in
the Fargo area. The four team members are all experienced in water and
disaster rescue and animal sheltering. The team will take with them two
trucks pulling a travel trailer and an equipment trailer with water and rope
rescue equipment and a boat and an animal transport van…

Noah’s Wish Mobilization to Bismarck, North Dakota Underway
http://www.noahswish.org/
Noah’s Wish is in the process of deploying volunteers to Bismarck, North
Dakota to open a shelter for evacuees from Fargo. Evacuations begin today as
residents of Fargo, population 92,000, begin the trek to shelters. The
Noah’s Wish shelter in Bismark expects to house more than 1,000 animals.
Volunteers are asked to contact convergent@milesend.org with availability.

3/25/09: Our Rapid Response manager, Rich Crook, is monitoring the situation
in North Dakota…but we do not expect to need any volunteers at this time.
In the event that emergency operations agencies in the area contact Best
Friends for help, we will work with local authorities to determine what is
needed and if and how Best Friends can provide assistance…

STOP HORSE SLAUGHTER BLITZ AT STATE/FEDERAL LEVELS

KINSHIP CIRCLE ANIMAL DISASTER AID NETWORK
This is an occasional Kinship Circle Primary alert we share with KC Disaster
Aid. Dual subscribers will get alert twice. Kindly delete the duplicate.

3/20/09: Stop Horse Slaughter Blitz At State/Federal Levels

LT PHOTO: Foals at slaughter. RT PHOTO: Horse injured on the way to
slaughter. Promoting The Humane And Responsible Treatment of Horses,
http://www.equineadvocates.com/slaughter5.htm

===========================================================
BACKGROUND + FEDERAL & STATE ACTIONS TO TAKE
===========================================================

Those in favor of horse slaughter for human consumption claim U.S. slaughter
plants are better regulated than kill floors in Mexico and Canada. Opponents
of a horse slaughter ban contend abandonment/starvation of horses (because
caretakers can’t finance their care) is far worse than slaughter. This line
of reasoning overlooks:

–   Americans don’t eat horsemeat and the majority oppose killing horses for meat.
–   Horses aren’t bred for meat and thus not checked for disease, pathogens prior to slaughter.
–   Animal abandonment is illegal. Offenders should be charged, not permitted to profit from killing horses.
–   Cow and pig slaughter methods used on horses are inhumane for these long-necked animals.

There are too many horses due to overbreeding in industries such as Premarin
and Prempro (HRT drugs from mare’s urine); carriage horses; riding stables,
etc. Rather than study feasibility of new slaughterhouses, proponents ought
to question: “Why are so many animals sent to slaughter, starved or abandoned
by owners who refuse to take responsibility for their horses’ humane care?”

THIS SAMPLE LETTER IS ABOUT FEDERAL BILL H.R. 503
If writing about a STATE BILL: You must modify letter to include STATE
BILL’S NAME and why you oppose/support it. SEE STATE BILLS ABOVE.
=============================================================

Dear Representative and Senators:

The Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act of 2009 (H.R. 503) is back on the
legislative calendar, after moving through the Judiciary Committee with
bipartisan approval in the last Congressional session. Please help pass this
measure to ban the possession, shipping, transporting, purchasing, selling,
delivering or receiving of a horse or horseflesh for human consumption.

I am counting on you to support H.R. 503, reintroduced 1/14/09 by House
Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, Jr. and Rep. Dan Burton. I
encourage my Senators to introduce and endorse a companion bill that also
activates an export-for-slaughter ban on our nation’s horses.

In 2007, state courts closed America’s last three equine processors in Texas
and Illinois. Still, the lack of a federal law let over 100,000 horses go to
slaughter in Canada and Mexico in 2008.

To reach kill plants, horses are jammed in double-decked cattle trailers
that hurt their heads and necks. Food, water and rest are withheld for 24 or
more hours. Horses arrive weak and injured. Some are dead by journey’s end.
Others kept in the over-packed trailers endure hot or cold weather extremes.
Horses who collapse are brutally offloaded.

Slaughter is excruciating for these easily excitable animals. Horses are
goaded into the kill box with fiberglass rods. Workers pummel their faces,
necks, backs and legs. The captive bolt pistols used in Canada often don’t
work on such long-necked animals, and leave them thrashing in pain.

In Mexico, killers use a “puntilla knife” to sever a horse’s spinal cord.
Investigative footage from a San Antonio News-Express expose in 2007 shows
alert horses stabbed repeatedly around the withers. When a horse finally
falls, he is merely paralyzed while workers dangle him by his hind leg and
slit his throat. Some horses even remain sentient when dismembered.

Violent slaughter should never be an alternative to rescue, adoption or
humane euthanasia. Furthermore, without a federal law horse kill plants may
reopen in states where they are not currently banned.

As a constituent, I ask my Representative to back the Prevention of Equine
Cruelty Act (H.R. 503). I urge my Senators to initiate similar legislation
to end slaughter and domestic/global transport of horses for human
consumption. Your feedback is very important to me.

Thank you,

CAN YOU HELP FUND KINSHIP CIRCLE’S INVESTIGATIVE RESEARCH?

appeal-banner

Can you help fund Kinship Circle’s investigative research?
Kinship Circle composes action campaigns that bring results. Supporters like
you take public outcry to the decision-making tables. Our past campaigns and
future goals require extensive research, investigation and materials
.

GOAL: $10,000
Any amount you can donate helps. We are deeply grateful for your support!

AMONG MANY VICTORIES FOR ANIMALS, KC CAMPAIGNS HAVE HELPED:
*   Expose a pet-killing dogcatcher and prompt his firing and subsequent
investigation. “Thanks to Kinship Circle’s help and publicity,” our source
writes, “We WON for the humane treatment of animals in our small town!”

*   Hurricane Gustav: Send volunteers to New Orleans to evacuate pets with their people.
*   Hurricane Ike: Coordinate volunteers to care for stranded animals.
*   Iowa Floods 2008: Rescue dogs, cats and even a few pigs displaced in the floods.

*   Network for funds and transport to ferry 8 sheep from a California
research lab
to their 1,000-acre refuge at The Kindness Ranch.

*   Persuade medical schools to drop live animal labs: New York Medical
College, Washington University School Of Medicine, Saint Louis University,
University of Rochester, University of Illinois

*   Give voice to Michael Vick’s dogs, who were spared, and push for maximum
penalties in federal and state cases.

*   Influence Congresspersons to support the Animal Fighting Prohibition
Enforcement Law,
which passed in 2007!

*   Lead to the cancellation of Camarillo, CA July 4th fireworks near the
Ventura County Animal Shelter, which traumatized animals.

*   Sway POM Wonderful pomegranate juice to cease all animal testing.

*   Craft letter campaigns and press materials for Senator Fontenot’s office
to pass the Louisiana Pet Evacuation Bill in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
Cathy Wells, Sen. Fontenot’s aide at the time, writes: “We all know if it
weren’t for Kinship Circle’s campaigns to legislators, this bill would not
have had the success it did…”

Just a few months ago, Kinship Circle helped send Christopher Barnett to
jail for filing his dog Lucas’ teeth down to the bloody gumline. “Thanks to
Kinship Circle for notifying the wider animal advocate community to write,
email, fax or call principal contacts,” Emilie Bottiggi writes.

Your tax-deductible donation lets us address more animal cruelty issues in

It feels like the whole of Victoria is up in
flames. We expect [human] fatalities to climb over 300 when they get around
to more isolated areas. [It is estimated] well over 1 million wild and
domestic animals have perished… Animals lucky enough to be rescued will
need months of care and rehabilitation. There are still 31 fires burning…

The Help for Wildlife response team — based in the vicinity where
Kinglake/Healesville fires occurred — are on standby to enter fire grounds
when safe to rescue injured wildlife. They already have a number of animals
in care and are expecting many more. Kangaroos and wallabies found in
abundance in this area can take months to recover and require a great deal
of dressings and medication.

SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR ANIMALS:

6. Wildlife Burning

FULL STORY:
http://newsok.com/animals-fall-victim-to-australian-fire/article/3345273

SYDNEY — Wildlife rescue officials worked frantically to help the animals
that made it through Australia’s worst-ever wildfires, but they said
millions of animals likely perished in the inferno. Hundreds of burned,
stressed and dehydrated animals — including kangaroos, koalas, lizards and
birds — already have arrived at shelters across the scorched region.
Rescuers have doled out antibiotics, pain relievers and fluids to the
critters in a bid to keep them comfortable, but some of the severely injured
were euthanized to spare any more suffering.

IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) has sent an emergency relief
team to help wild and domestic animals affected by the devastating fires in
Victoria. Tania Duratovic is leading the IFAW team in Whittlesea. We arrived
in Whittlesea (2/9/09) and set up in the staging area…

Today we traveled to Kinglake West and Kinglake Central – two of the worst
hit areas. Remnants of trees and piles of rubble are all that is left of
what used to people’s homes and indeed whole towns. People are happy…to
see something emerge alive from the devastation. As one person recounted as
they handed over a slightly burned ring-tailed possum, “We have lost our
house, our neighbours and our pets but we found this little guy alive —
please help him, I just want him to live.”

9_275t
IFAW vet Dr. Howard Ralph administered first aid and the possum is now under
the care of Help for Wildlife volunteers.
Dr. Ralph, is a renowned vet,
burns specialist and human doctor. He is helping local vets treat pets at
the survivors’ shelter in Whittlesea. Photo © IFAW / M. Fillinger

So far we have been able to provide immediate aid to many animals suffering
from the effects of the fire including dogs, cats, horses, ducks, chickens,
wallabies, possums, kangaroos, joeys, koalas, a peacock, a lyrebird, a goat,
a dingo and an orphaned baby deer…

SYDNEY — A bond between two burned koalas rescued from Australia’s
deadliest wildfires has provided some heart-warming relief after days of
devastation and the loss of more than 180 lives and possibly millions of
animals. The story of the koalas emerged after volunteer firefighter David
Tree used a mobile phone to photograph and film the rescue of the bewildered
female, since nicknamed Sam, that was found cowering in a burned-out forest
at Mirboo North, 90 miles southeast of Melbourne.

11_4t
Photos and video of Tree, 44, approaching Sam while talking gently to her,
and feeding her water from a plastic bottle as she put her burned claw in
his cold, wet hand quickly hit YouTube, making her an Internet sensation.

But it was after reaching a wildlife shelter that Sam met and befriended
another koala, nicknamed Bob, who was saved by wildlife workers  two days

I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY

I Rescued A Human Today

I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY…

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively

into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I

wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid.

As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had
in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked
today. Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to
think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past.
I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in
someone’s life. She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at
me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort
her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for
companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her
that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and  her smile was so bright that I instantly
jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to
always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that
radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down
my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the  corridors.
So many more to be saved. At least I could save  one.

I rescued a human today.
